Do not demolish!

"Never demolish, never remove or replace, always add, transform, and reuse!"
Frédéric Druot, Anne Lacaton, and Jean-Philippe Vassal

The program for the New Building for the ITU Headquarters proposes the demolition of the 1960’s Varembé building. Upon careful assessment, we respectfully ask why? The competition assumptions need to be revisited, based on the cultural value of the existing building, the partial liberalization of Swiss building codes, and advances in building technologies. For historical, economic, and sustainability reasons we do not demolish and instead transform and reuse.

Our strategy thus begins with retaining the Varembé building’s concrete frame and facade, renovating the interior spaces, and adding onto the structure. We propose only one new building volume for conference and thematic spaces.
